Make sure that they're artists. Some just print a picture off the internet and use it as a template rather than being able to create it themselves.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Had you thought about attending a tattoo convention near you aswell.

You get to see lots of diffrent styles all in one place and it can really help to judge what you would like. Plus the tattooist are quite chatty and friendly at the conventions and often previoui customers will be there so you can see the work in real life.

There is a massive one in London every September which is worth a look but as JoJo said take your time looking into it and go with your gut decision if you don't feel comfy run for the hills

I would suggest always going by personal recommendations.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

As many have said, personal recommendations are great (but have a look at the tats of the person giving their recommendation and see if you think they actually look good quality and you like the syle of the artist - someone could think their ink is amazing when in actual fact it is rubbish). Also as Ames said - go to a studio that does CUSTOM tattoos - do not go somewhere that has books or boards of things for you to chose from and they just copy. Any good studio will not offer this as an option. I only ever go to places where they are custom only. HTH :)
  • Actually, depending on which part of Kent you are and the sort of work you want done, I could give the name of a custom studio near to me which could be worth chatting to. It's South London, but easy to escape from :)
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

There's also tattoo forums, so if you don't know anyone who could recommend you someone ask on one of these for recommendations. You would need to say what your after though so people could help you. Then you can go and look at their work etc.
Some tattoo artists only do certain types of tattoos so you would need to check that out as well. I know a very good place in Sheffield that has won a lot of awards.Let me know if your interested and I'll tell you.

These aren't too far away from me and they seem to have a good Ethos. I will check them out in person and see from there.
