Do I need a special version of Windows XP Professional to install on a Dell D600 laptop
I have managed to copy the files to the hard drive but it has stopped at Setup is starting Windows, been like that for the past 30 minutes.
I am using an old copy of Windows XP Professional from an old computer, not an OEM version, this is all perfectly legal.
I might be that there is a file missing for the hard drive.
An incorrect mass-storage device (such as a SCSI or IDE controller) driver is being loaded, or the driver was not written for Windows and is not compatible.
How do I get a correct file onto the hard drive?

Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:

I would guess (probably wrongly of course) that you have formatted the drive what have you formatted it as NTFS/Fat32 , also what size of drive is it. You may need to go to the Drive manufacturers site to download a driver for it and if I remember correctly that far back I think you need to press F6 when setup starts so you can use that driver.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . you can't just copy the XP files to the hdd, you need to install it properly from a bootable installation cd...

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
A Latitude D600 (assuming this is the old Pentium-m one) is IDE, not SATA and it shouldn't need an additional driver for the hard drive and if it did it wouldn't let you start the install. Is it coming up with that error about the incorrect driver?
I believe you'll need an OEM XP Pro CD anyway as the different install medias (retail, OEM, VLU) were not compatible so if you try to install using a retail disc then activate with the OEM key on the CoA I believe it will fail.
I'm a bit puzzled about what you've been saying with copying files to the hard drive, if that's the one you're installing Windows do you shouldn't have the install files there - you should be installing from the CD, if it's failing during the install then there's an error either with the media or the hardware.
