I am trying to put Windows XP onto a laptop that I put a new hard drive into.
For some reason the install stalls and the CD drive stops spinning when the files have been partly copied to the hard drive.
I have the hard drive formatted and booting into MSDOS and use a windows 98 CD-ROM to enable CD-ROM support.
Now I want to copy the files from a Windows XP CD-ROM onto the hard drive and then install from there.
How do I copy the files, using xcopy, from the CD-ROM to the hard drive?
I can boot from USB but that fails half way through the install as well.
The laptop is a DELL D600.
I have managed to copy the files.

Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:

Here's how I did it.
Win98 in drive and boot. Select "With CD Rom support"
At the command prompt, enter "Fdisk"
Delete all partitions
Come out of Fdisk.
Remove Win98 and insert Win XP disk.
Reboot
Follow instructions on screen to install.
Don't forget you'll have to have the Dell drivers for sound graphics and network device and also a serial (Should be on a label on your computer, and the Windows disk must be the same, ie, Win XP Pro, Home etc.:cool:0
