Don't know about you lot, but I'm miles away from planting seeds spuds yet. The ground was solid until yesterday and due for a freeze again tonight.

If you plant under plastic maybe, but not for me yet.

Once again Annie is absolutely right. I would take info from the RHS before anyone else every time.

I'd bung them in the ground and not worry about it. Potatoes generally seem to grow regardless of how badly you treat them. The leggyness will soon go once they're in the cool dark ground.

I rarely bother to chit. It doesn't seem to make a difference to me.

Chit rubbing has always seen a bit of a potato perversion to me and as you can see from the above, a very controversial issue in gardening.

Regardless of what you do, you probably don't need to buy new ones.

Sorry OP - I didn't mean you should cut out the shoots you've already got I'll stick by leave as they are. I meant that in future when you first chit your seed potatoes to cut the unwanted chits rather than rub them off.

JBA themselves seem to be sending out mixed messages as it clearly states on their website that "rubbing is a sheer waste of the tubers resources" I can only assume that on the Vegie forum they've stated to "rub the shoots and start again" that this is because the OP had nothing to loose by doing so at that stage. It also clearly states on JBA website that "much of the advice is just a an individuals personal experience" and we've all rightly given the OP our own experiences.

Planted in bags in my greenhouse at the weekend:

And when I made the cuts on 28th February:

The potatoes I've planted are JBA Charlotte.
