Boxing in Pipes in Bathroom

Hi all,
Not sure if this is the correct thread but I am planning on fitting tiles floor to celling in our bathroom and on the floor. We rent from the council and they have approved us to tile the walls and to box in the pipes. The agreement is we must be able to get to the pipes if needed behind the boxing.
I am looking for ideas on what to do. Some people suggest UPVC panels for the boxing screwed to a frame. Some suggest ply wood then tiles onto the wood and other suggest fit access panels and plasterboard it.

Here is the pipes

  • How about a wooden frame with ply on the front and tile that. A framed ply lid to sit on top. Lift it off if you need access.

That is a typical Local authority bodge up of a plumbing job !

Correct use of bends and twisting the collars on the 110mm down pipe would have allowed the fitting of a close coupled toilet.

A complete waste of floor space and causing you problems with boxing in. I am not a plumber but have done industrial pipe fitting and would have been sacked for an install like that.

Get the council back in to do a proper job !

Good God above - what a lash up. Clearly been fitted according to the Olympic method. Your boxes are going to have to be enormous. The makeshift trap on the basin (??) waste implies that there have been syphonage issues in the past. I can see why they are insisting on retaining access.

    Cheers

I know what you mean about the council but i am just going to box in as its more hassle, time to get them to do the pipes. It will take months for them to even reply and i am to busy with work to spend time waiting for them to visit and never turn up.

How far would you go toward the bath with the boxing.

:o Let alone that, how are you going to fit a framework for any, AND make it removable with that lash up?

The down pipe going down through the floor has been installed in totally the wrong position from BUILD!

The expression "lash-up" springs to mind. The person who did that really had to work at it to make that installation as ugly as that.
Not sure that there is anything much that can be done to improve the appearance. If it was mine I would be stripping it out and doing it properly myself. Presumably not feasible in a Council house.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I think I'd build a box for myself, it'd be easier!

Given it's council, not yours or a private landlord, I'd do a simple, cheap job to improve the look, not try to make it perfect.

Flat sheet of wood straight from back of bath to wall, just under loo cistern. Cut round 110mm downpipe on right, fit baton to wall and to bath end panel as support. Second sheet fitted in vertically at back of pan to support front edge of horizontal flat sheet, and screw using a couple of screws to hold in place. I realise that boxes in a fair amount of (useless) space, but it could come in handy to bury the next council plumber's body. Frankly, I wouldn't box in the wall 110mm, just couldn't be bothered. I'd stick a couple of large ferns on the panel I'd put in, and let them tickle my bottom instead.

Edit: Oh, you'd need a baton along the back wall as support too ... just a couple of bits would do it, no intrinsic strength needed. Same along floor at front for bottom of vertical board. Then I'd paint it a BRIGHT colour...
