Have recently purchased a dell 6400 laptop which is installed with vista business software.
I believe my existing modem speedtouch 330 with talktalk is not suitable with my new laptop.
I want to go "wireless" at home.
Can anyone tell me what i need to get it up and running.
Without checking i think the dell laptop has a netgear card installed.
Where can i buy this equipment fairly cheapish, i had a quick look on the talktalk website and they want £69.99 for there kit? Is that cheap or is it expensive.
cheers

see http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/cat/Wireless/subcat/ADSL---Broadband-Modems---Wireless-Routers
and http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/127679/rb/27766446861 for their special "TalkTalk offer" at £29.99
Talk Talk specify "ADSL2+" to their users so it's best to ensure the router spec includes it.0 -
You can download the SPeedtouch Vista drivers from Here.
http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/codepages/content3.asp?c=7&ProductID=471
make sure you remove any previous drivers.
I recently installed a Speedtouch 330 on a persons Vista PC who couldnt get it working as they tried to install XP speedtouch drivers on it.
make sure you remove any previous drivers.this may require using the system restore feature.0 -

It's down to personal preference, any adsl wireless router should work.

Talk Talk have an issue with some Netgear models, check the Talk Talk website for details.0

They sell them..

£17 more expensive than ebuyer though, or £27 more if you use google checkout on ebuyer.
PS to the OP, you don't need the adapter because there is one built-in to the laptop, so just get a router.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
They report a small number of Netgear DG834G ver.1 had problems connecting, but other versions are OK.

Non-supported Routers
Most of our customers will have no trouble using a non-supported WiFi router on TalkTalk network. All you'll need to do is enter:
Your user credentials
All the relative settings found on Connect and Go CD onto your router - e.g. Incoming / Outgoing mail server; DNS servers; ADSL Modulation; Encapsulation mode etc
Your security settings such as WEP key / WPA key
A small percentage of TalkTalk customers who are using a non-TalkTalk router will not be able to connect to our service. We have identified that the following Netgear router may not work on our network:
DG834G - Version 1
With this router there may be an issue with the firmware, which presents the customer with the following error message: "CHAP authentication failed" - this prevents the customer from connecting to the Internet.
The following Netgear routers seem to have no connection issues with our network and have been tested:
DG834G - Version 2
DG834G - Version 30 -
Didnt know it was that complicated in getting a modem.
On ebuyer there are a few netgear wireless modems but I cant seem to find which is version 2 or 3?
Can anyone help!0 -
There are many DG834G on eBay, so if you're buying it there make sure it's not version 1. It is highly unlikely that eBuyer or any retail outlet would sell this old version.0
