Buying an ebook reader - Any tips/considerations?

Options
I need to buy a standard ebook reader and I was wondering if anyone has any tips. I'm leaning towards a Kindle and will probably opt for the cheapest one but I just wanted to make sure I'm making the right decision.

Are there are any tips or considerations I need to take into account before buying? Its for my daughter BTW and Im gonna be using some Love2Shop vouchers.

Thanks :)

on here is a fairly comprehensive article - I'm after one myself and can't make my mind up between the kindle, kobo and nook. They all have advantages and disadvantages.
Another slightly outdated article (again on this site ) http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/team-blog/2012/03/06/kindle-vs-kobo-battle-of-the-e-readers/

I have a kindle and it's great. I can read it for hours as it's like printed paper.

There are also lots of cheap books and free ones on the amazon website you can download. Since I use amazon quite a bit, choosing a kindle was like a no brainer for me :D

I've got a basic kindle and I've been surprised how good it is. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't have a keyboard so entering text is a slow process - but then the only times I need to type is when buying a book, so it doesn't come up that often, and you often only need to type a few letters before it guesses what you are looking for.

I have a Kindle Touch; it is just precisely suited to its job.
I don't like all the buttons on the normal Kindle, so the Touch is just fine.
  • I got my wife the kindle wi fi £69.00 its very lightweight which was a must, books were just too heavy. She is reading every day now and loves it.
The one tip I have is to turn off the wifi after downloading books, it makes the battery last so much longer.
also if you google "free ebooks" there are lots of free downloads.

Only downside is that Kindle locks you into Amazon because it uses its own proprietary file format, AZW. All other e-book readers are e-Pub based. So it depends what you want to put on it, and where you want to buy from.
For example, most UK libraries will lend e-Pub but not Kindle format e-books. because they'd have to buy the stock twice over.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I recently bought an e-book reader and was having the same wonderings as you. The thing that swung it for me in the end was that with a non-Kindle, I can get ebooks from my local library online for free.

Being able to buy from other online stores doesn't bother me that much, but getting books from the library was a real bonus for me. It might be worth you investigating your local library's ebook lending procedure; I believe some don't offer ebooks at all, but if yours does it could be a great way for you to read books for free (or very cheap).

For these reasons I went for a Nook and have been very happy with it.
