I read somewhere that spraying the surfaces where they walk on with a teatree oil and water mixture helps keep them away as they taste with their feet and they don't like the taste on that, also citrus oils should do same trick. I had a spider problem in a house i had back last year, and i'm petrified of spiders, my mother used to have to come down and get rid of them for me because it got to a point where i would have to shower in her house etc because there'd be spiders in the bathroom. I used the teatree oil mixture and it helped a bit, not for long though, but if you kept touching it up every few days? Be careful though because it's toxic to cats. I also use hair spray on them, then sweep them away.

Thanks I am prepared to give anything a go!!
Love reading the oldstyle board...always something to learn!

I'm afraid I go down the chemical route and with good reason!

Twice I have nearly had car accidents due to spiders in my car. The second time was after we took an old greenhouse to the tip. It hadn't occurred to me that my car may be full of spiders until I was going round a sharp bend (on nearly deserted country lanes) and saw a huge one on the seat next to me. I stopped and leapt out, and had to wait about 10 minutes for a cyclist to catch up with me, stop them and ask them to remove it :o

I bought the smoke bombs and put one of those in the car :D Problem sorted!

I have also used smoke bombs in my previous house which was full of spiders. Then I use Ind0rex which is a flea treatment that they pick up on their feet and it kills them. I do the whole of downstairs twice a year and very rarely see a spider in here now.

I am not as bad as I used to be with them but I still am petrified of huge ones and fast ones

I probably would smoke bomb the shed and ind0rex it if I was you, BUT I would be a bit concerned for any overwintering solitary bees and butterfly chrysalis' that may be in there :(

However, if I needed the shed, it would be a 'them or me' situation and i'm afraid I would win :o

(I get the smoke bombs and ind0rex from the bay of e ;) )

I'm with the live and let live brigade.I'm not keen on them but then anything with more than two feet isn't too welcome in my house anyway. But I wouldn't kill them as they do more good than harm and are far more frightened of you a million time great in size human that a tiny scuttling spider Yes I know they look enormous but be honest its a spider not an eigh leggen gorgon who will eat you in one gulp.Get a friend who isn't too fussed to clear you shed out with a broom and hopefully they will run away as soon as the doors opened.Things I really hate are mice even though I know in size I am far greater its just the thought of them that puts me in a cold sweat :):)
  • Hi, I don't mind the odd spider but if I had to enter a shed with loads of spiders and cobwebs I'd probably feel the same as op. If you do decide to vacumn then up, then be aware they can crawl back out again - so if you brought Henry back into your house then you will transfer them to inside!
I must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:

Conkers! Apparently. I remember Sarah Kennedy mentioned it on her radio 2 show a few years ago.

To those who say spiders eat dangerous insects - I don't think we have any really dangerous ones in Britain. However spiders can give nasty bites which can get badly infected - my husband had a very nasty one on his foot a couple of years ago. He still has the scar.

I found a false widow on my back door step, and one climbing the curtain in the house  If you google "false widow bites" you will see how nasty they can be! Frightening.

My mother had multiple bites from gardening in open toed sandals about 10 years ago - ended up with terrible swelling and pain - turned out to be spider bites.... She was previously of the opinion that spiders in this country are harmless ;)

In fact, we have about a dozen biting spiders in the uk, not including any escaped 'pets':eek::eek:

OMG I am all jumpy now! A strand of hair just ticked my neck and I nearly jumped through the roof!!!

That's my biggest fear fruball - spider in the car. I would leap out of a moving car if I needed to :o

I too have called people off the street to come and deal with spiders in the house.

Kill zem, you must kill zem all!! I'd sooner have a house full of flies than one scary spider.

To all the people who say spiders eat dangerous/dirty insects, I've never yet in my half century of life been damaged/infected/made ill by any insect. I have, however, had numerous heart-stopping moments, panic attacks and humiliating incidents in public and the workplace caused by my phobia of spiders. If you aren't phobic about them you can't understand.

OP, pay a local young man to hoover/sweep/hit with newspaper or whatever it takes to get rid of the monsters.

I am phobic about them, it's not an excuse to kill them. "you're harmless but I'm scared so you must die" Not really seeing the logic little own the morality.

Get a humane catcher such as this:

    http://www.lakeland.co.uk/20455/Spider-Catcher?src=gpsol&gclid=CLK09eSYm7YCFUbKtAod9TsA6Q

You can get them from ages away and release them at the bottom of the garden or wherever.

I'm sorry, but if a spider's in my territory, it has to leave!! I usually try and sweep them up with a brush & dustpan and then throw them out, but if I see them, so does my Yorkie Terrier, and he then deals with them for me :D That is all except the mother of all spiders I found in the shed - it really was about the size of my hand . The dog took one look and fled:rotfl:. However, to answer your op kettlenic, I'm with the vacuum idea I'm afraid.

As an aside, my niece sent me this the other day (warning to all arachophobes)

    (Hope I done it right - I've never posted a pic before:o)
