Scary shed question.......

Weird question, so we asked our land lady to fix the door on the shed so we could use it - it a brick structure, so it now has a lovely new door - all sealed in there...

but prior to that is was a spider heaven! and now while I am keen to store things in the shed - like the camping equipment...but want to know how I can 'clean' it out

can I user one of those smoke bug bombs to kill off any other spiders that may be lurking? what do you reccommend - considering how scared I am of spiders in the first place...?

Spiders are our friends, so it would be wicked to kill them. Plus, they prey on other, smaller nasties. Nastiest which can harbour disease and spread germs, harming us.

Plus, smoke bug-bombs are unlikely to work in any case.

If you truly want to get rid of spiders have someone else give the place a good sweeping-out with a broom.
  • Simple solution - get somebody else in the family to put things in and take them out. Spiders live to deal with the nasty insects, you have storage, nobody needs poison anything.

Get a Henry (or similar) and start at the door. Move inwards, vacuuming as you go.

Im sure the spiders are far more scared of you!!! My girls are both scared stupid by them. If you really must clean it, please just use a brush and dustpan. At least then you can empty them out away from your shed. As others have said they actually eat more dangerous insects, so in a way they are helping you.

To all the people who say spiders eat dangerous/dirty insects, I've never yet in my half century of life been damaged/infected/made ill by any insect. I have, however, had numerous heart-stopping moments, panic attacks and humiliating incidents in public and the workplace caused by my phobia of spiders. If you aren't phobic about them you can't understand.

OP, pay a local young man to hoover/sweep/hit with newspaper or whatever it takes to get rid of the monsters.
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.

You're fortunate to have never had a dodgy tummy, then.

And has it occurred to you that the reason you haven't had anything (infected mozzie bite, horsefly bite or anything else) could be because spiders have eaten the potential offenders?

  • I read somewhere that spraying the surfaces where they walk on with a teatree oil and water mixture helps keep them away as they taste with their feet and they don't like the taste on that, also citrus oils should do same trick. I had a spider problem in a house i had back last year, and i'm petrified of spiders, my mother used to have to come down and get rid of them for me because it got to a point where i would have to shower in her house etc because there'd be spiders in the bathroom. I used the teatree oil mixture and it helped a bit, not for long though, but if you kept touching it up every few days? Be careful though because it's toxic to cats. I also use hair spray on them, then sweep them away.
