... make me want to scream!

Sometime ago a poster here outlined one method of stopping these, however it didn't work for me (option grayed out if I remember). There was a second way which I've searched for but can't find.

I'd be grateful for instructions please?

Or is it best to ditch this and use another anti-virus software instead?

Is Windows Defender enough?

Thanks

It could've been me describing the workaround, which I did a few times.

It got so bad that Avira were altering the pop-up mechanism to avoid the well-documented workaround.

At this point I gave up and I now use Avast! instead.

avast free without defender, with free malwarebytes should suffice.

All the avast popups (update alerts) can be turned off if required

It's not the update alerts, it's the daily offers of free business cards etc which are grating!

EDIT - sorry, didn't read your response properly and thought you were talking about Avira!

Thanks for the advice - will change things.

yeah, it really is too much advertising - I went through this on two machines in the last week or so, went through the guides to stop the popups but now I get an error message popping up instead of the ads so just as annoying - uninstalled and went for avast, you'd think they might have noticed the numbers of folk installing and then uninstalling, shame they don't have a wee thing for feedback at the uninstall!

I can live with it, Avira has been so good for me and performance is so good I would really hate to change.

The big box adverts that pop up nearly full screen I don't see due to a really handy little free utility I use called clickoff, it sits in the tray and any window you don't like you right click clickoff and tell it which one, it then instantly closes that windows next time it appears. That deals with the big one. The little box that pops up from the icon tray is only after a daily update so its not a major inconvenience.

If you trust Avira to do it job well, then its not like its sold your granny to slave traders or anything just for the odd popup - it is free after all.

    Thanks.

It's not just the odd pop-up, it's more than once a day and it annoys me, free or not. But, each to their own so I have now uninstalled it.

There was a 'survey' at uninstall asking why I was doing it and what they could do to keep me!

    Answered it robustly but politely.

I do know what you mean. They go through phases of changing how heavy handed it is, perhaps they will have a rethink, hopefully!
