I'm with EDF - been with them since last summer.

They set up the direct debits for me, no messing about on their website.

As you are aware, the supplier is required to provide advance notice of the initail amount to be collected, as they are required to provide such notice regarding changes to that amount or date of collectiom.

If they've sent you an email that you've not received, then that is not EDF's problem. Check your spam box and/or contact your email provider.

Although the bank may have refunded you your money, (they have to on your request as they have to take your word as to any such complaint), EDF are entitled to ask you for the money they are owed.

You said they sent you an email.
That's certainly how they advised me of what my DD payments would be.

Hmmm - The problem is that neither yourself or EDF know this dwellings previous consumption history, on which to base D/Debit payments to pay for your yearly consumption of Gas & Elec

What appears to be known is that one winter months Gas cost £105 and Elec £78, but was this bill based on actual readings or estimates - If these are readings, it's possible to work out very rough annual figures
    Gas
Rule of thumb is that 80% of your Annual gas bill will be for the Winter months - Say 6 months at £105, then 6 months at £21= £756 a year, £63 a month
    Elec
In Summer your Elec bill will be around 20% less than in Winter, so on the 6 month formula above, it works out to £70 a month - It must be said that for a Gas Heated & Hot watered dwelling, an Annual bill of £840 for Elec. is very high, but it depends on the size of the dwelling

Your best bet is to take weekly readings from both the Gas & Elec meters and work out the costs from the tariff you are on, and also ask EDF if they have a better tariff

Monthly DD is payment in advance/ distributed through the year, if you chose not to set that up from day one you were asking for payment in arrears, so the first payment could legitimately be higher to catch up.

The supplier can't speak to you by telephone about your direct debit without going through security first, you really should not be doing that on the basis of a cold call because it could be a scam. Plus if they telephoned every customer it would take weeks!
