MPPI - Cover Needed

Hi
When we mortgaged in dec 05 via London and Country, my partner to out payment shield MPPI cover disability and unemployment, free for 6 months then £61.11 per month, I didnt require it.
However now feel I may.
Just read Martin's guide and via Best Insurance, to cover mortgage of £1067 per month, is only £25.61 rising to £33.65 for same value (£1401.50) as payment shield.
Okay 6 months was free, however why such a big difference? Will Best Ins pay out .. its just so cheap
Also if i wanted cover myself, would we have to take out 2 policies or does a thing such as joint cover exist.
