Wheres the logic??!!

Hi

I am a married mum and work full time. My husband who was previously self employed is unemployed (for reasons which I wont go into now) and applied for jobseekers allowance in November 2006. I also applied for tax credits at around the same time. The jobcentre quite a long time sorting his claim and then sent his claim to their canterbury office and asked him for various papers which he provided including accounts. Meanwhile my husband had been making trips to jobcentre every fortnight to sign on and in the end they wrote to him saying he does not qualify for a penny.
I had already recieved the outcome of the tax credit claim which said we qualified for the maximum tax credits. So it wasnt such a big blow when told he wasnt eligible.
A few weeks ago we received a form from the council asking us to give an update of our circumstances as we were on housing benefit and that we may also qualify for council tax benefit. So I sent them all the information and they wrote back that we were not entitled to housing benefit and would have to pay back what had already been paid.
Two weeks ago we recieved a tax credits declaration asking if there had been any change in our circumstances and I told them that the only change is that my husband is not in receipt of jobseekers allowance. They then wrote back saying that because my husband isnt receiving any JSA our tax credits payments will be reduced and we will also have to pay a lot of it back. So if he was recieveng money from JSA he would also recieve the maximum tax credits but hes not receiving either.
My tax credit payments are now a quarter of what they used to be.
We now have only £100 in the bank to last us till I get paid at the end of the month. Not ideal when you have 2 growing kids to feed.
Can you see the logic of the above situation because I certainly can't. What could one do in a situation like this? How many other people must there be in this situation? Its unbelievable.

Thanks for listening if nothing else.

how many hrs do you work ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

If your tax credits have been reduced and they want some back, go back to your Council, you may now be entitled to housing benefit!
