I am buying a house that has been vacant for several months. Who will be my gas and electric supplier when I move in, can i go and sign up with any company on the day I move in or will I have to go with the suppliers of the previous owners initially and then go thru the switching process?

    - I don't know, you don't know .... yet
    - the current supplier will already have you on a 'deemed contract' as your supplier
    - your supplier usually has you on the most expensive 'standard' tariff they can apply
    - you can ring that supplier [look for the welcome to the new householder] letter from the supplier
    - submit your meter readings the first day, and negotiate a new better cheaper / cheapest tariff
    - you can, once you know your supplier & tariff calculate your costs
    - once you can calculate your costs you can visit more than one 'comparison' sites
    - find a better tariff and only then do you go through the switching process

Direct debit / e-account / no paper billing / you submit monthly readings / etc will always get you the cheapest tariff.

You will have to first register with the existing suppliers when you complete
