What is PHP?
for websites.
And SQL?
Can it be used on an ordinary laptop?
I have a social club that runs its website that uses the programming languages SQL and php to maintain it.
Think they used one of these to design it too.
I have my own website but I used Microsoft Word to create it on a what you see is what you get basis.
Can I use the above programs to do the same?
I am just being curious.
Ain't no brainbox and speedtyping not my thing.
for websites.

If I fail to thank you individually, I am sorry. Your advice was appreciated but may not have been 100% the result I was after.

PHP is a language used to design dynamic webpages rather than a program as such. You can use web design packages or just type code straight into the page when writing PHP.
SQL is a query language used for pulling information from databases - again, its's a language rather than a 'program'.0 -
you would really need to learn xhtml and css before trying to make use of more complex things like php and mysql0

MySQL and PHP are the commonest software components of a linux web server. Typically reffered to as 'LAMP' (Linux + Apache + MySQL + PHP). LAMP is used on something like 80% of the worlds webservers.
The difference between websites that use these technologies rather than plain HTML or 'flat' websites is that they are automated using programming and interfacing a database.
That's not at all as complicated as it sounds. Beginners at web design can easily set up fully automated web sites using free and open source software such as WordPress for Blogging. You just copy the program to the webspace and point your web browser to it. It will ask you for a password to the database, which your provider should have given you. Setup takes a few minutes - literally, and you end up with an all singing and dancing website.
You can find many free providers of LAMP webspace.
You can run a LAMP webserver on any PC, for testing for example, by installing one of the many pre built packages such as xampp.
Windows performs poorly as a web server with it's very poor task switching capabilities, but for testing/ designing with few users it will do fine.0
