Motor Insurance: Multi-car Quote - chicken and egg situation

I currently have multi-car insurance with a well known Insurance company and have just received my renewal documentation. I want to compare it to other companies, but when I contact the other companies, they are unable to give me a multi-car quote until I have an active policy with them for at least one car.

They are prepared to give me separate quotes and an indication of the level of discount, but will not sell me a multi-car policy until I have insured the first car with them. As both of my cars are effectively on the same policy and have the same renewal date, it appears that I cannot take out a new multi-car policy without breaking the law and having one car uninsured for a period of time.

This makes a mockery of the market as I cannot switch and get a multi-car policy at the same time.

Does anybody know of any company that is prepared to give a multi-car quote for a new customer?

We have 3 cars, and I shop around every year - the companies seem to be perfectly happy to give me a quote, even discussing which would be the best car to have as the 'first' and which as the 'discounted' cars. Really, no problem.

Can you tell me which companies then please - I have tried Direct Line, Admiral, Churchill and Aviva and get the same response..... Insure one car with us and we'll discuss the second afterwards.

There are only two insurers that can give you proper multi car quote online.

I have tried Admiral and was able to get a quote without buying although I could not purchase online, I had to ring in to confirm to quote and buy.

Aviva have the best website although possibly not the best prices, I was able to get my multi car quote and purchase it online.

I can only think you have missed something on the Aviva site because I have purchased multi car online twice with them in recent years.

Primo plc will give you a quote, but not online.

LV will also quote over the phone, but not online. They were very helpful in advising me to have DH's car as the "primary" and mine as the "secondary" (as I have fewer driving years/no claims than him).

They still couldn't beat Admiral's price though (new quote came in almost £200 cheaper than the auto-renew)
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

  • We're currently with Aviva. I always call, rather than trying to do it online (our situation is quite complex, quite apart from having 3 cars between 2 of us, so we don't really fit into the online 'boxes'), and there's never been a problem.
