NI credits for full-time mums?

I heard this on the news last week. The HMRC website says that NI credits are applied automatically if in receipt of child benefit for a child under 12. It does say Class 3 contributions. What is the difference in the contribution classifications?

Class 3 only counts towards state pension qualification

  • thankyou. what is the coverage of class 2 contributions?

Will the full-time mum class 3 contributions be automatically credited or do I need to ask somebody to apply this?

They are automatically credited if you are the named person on the child benefit claim, I believe Class 2 is for self employed people.

Class 1 employed or credited on certain benefits
    Class 2 self employed
    Class 3 voluntary
Class 4 self employed based on profit

See the table on this page here describing which benefits are avaliable with each class of NI contributions
