Vista

Hello
I've just bought a new computer with Vista on it. I hate it. I have a disc from my old computer with XP on it. Would it be possible to use this disc so I can go back to XP on the new one? Any help would be much appreciated.

How long have you given Vista? I've got a new lappie, and I HATED vista with a passion at first - thought it was unhelpful and unintuitive. Almost put my XP on instead.

However, after a week of exploring, I really like it!!!

With respect to your question, you should be able to XP your lappie - if it's spec is suitable for using Vista, it should cope OK.

If your copy of Windows XP came with the old computer, unfortunately it's against the licence agreement to install it on the new one.

If you got it seperately, no problem - but give Vista some time :)

    Yes it may well work.
You might have an issue with drivers and obviously you'd lose any software that came with your Vista laptop, unless it was supplied on separate discs...ie if you bought MS Office 2003 with it, you can reinstall it after installing XP.

As for the legality, if your copy of XP from your old machine is an "oem" disc (it most likely is unless it was retail, boxed, from a shop) then it is against the Microsoft terms to install it on your new laptop. Doesn't mean you can't do it - but it is breaking the licence agreement.

As you've got Vista already though - I'd take a look on the web. There are ways to make it appear more like XP...which might save you the reinstall job.

    Ditto here too.
I had a new PC recently and had to decide XP or VISTA.
It look a while to get used to it and I had to stick in another 2 Gbit of memory but now I am used to it i much prefere it to XP.
My PC has not crashed once and the extra RAM has cured slow startup problems people seem to be getting.
Remember we will all be using VISTA in the next few years except for a few dinosaurs who will stick the the same old operating systems they have always ed used

It'd be silly to downgrade to an OS which will have no support from 2009.

For those who are arrogant that Vista is rubbish, DELL is now offering yesterday's software on some of their systems...

    Blackadder: Yes it is.
    Baldrick: Hmm... that's cunning.
