Hi all

I'm trying to get my copy of Word to default to the English(UK) version of the dictionary. It's currently defaulting to French (for some bizarre reason).
I've googled on how change the default dictionary but it doesn't seem to keep the changes.
I've been through the language settings tool and that's showing English(UK) as my default editing language so I don't know where to go from here.

Anyone any ideas?

Are you setting the language via the "Word Option" button when clicking the round Office Button at the top left, or via the "Review" ribbon ? (or both?)

If via the "Review" tab - are you also clicking on the "Default..." button to update the Normal template ?

Is the Normal template Read/Write and not Read Only?

Phoodles - I've just done it (again) in the review tab (under the "Set Language" option) and clicked the default button. I don't know if the Normal Template is read-only but it's not giving me any errors.

I've removed all my custom dictionaries and created a new one.

That hasn't seemed to help.

Maybe try through the "Word Options" button (via the Office circle button in the top left) ?

I think I've sorted it.
It looks like I had to select the entire document to make it take effect. I've now got the dictionary (for this document at least) into English UK mode.

Is it a document that you created ?

If not, then you may have to do that everytime you receive a document unless you get the author to change their settings ?

It's a document that was created ages ago that I was updating.
The person that created it is no longer here so hopefully it won't be an issue in future.

I've had to do just that recently. I was using a template document created by someone else that had English UK and US, Swedish, Brazilian, and a couple of others in it! :rotfl:

Ctrl-A and set to English UK and all was sorted.
(Don't forget to do the same for headers/footers - they don't get caught when you Ctrl-A in the main body).
