I'm really looking for someone to help me figure out where to go with my life next, then to help me get there. I have recently left my job with a decent redundancy package. I could look for another job in the same field or I could retrain. I could also stay where I am, relocate within the UK or emigrate (I have Australian citizenship). I'm starting to think I might have too many options and it's all getting rather confusing. I'm not sure if a life coach is the right person to help me with this or not?

Thanks for the advice so far

Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending
  • Yes, that's exactly the kind of dilemma coaching is designed to help with. Your coach will be able to help you figure out which of your options are the most realistic and achievable, and help you with any planning or preparation needed to make the option a reality. They'll use a combination of skilled questioning, active listening, and a few tools (exercises) designed to help you reach a decision objectively and without any bias over which option you choose.
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

Don't loose perspective though that she can't tell you what is best for you and that even coaching will help you decide what the right choice is. no one can read into the future and each decision will have some risks. You can asses that risk and go with the least risky one or you can decide to go for the one with the best possible outcome. What matters is what happens once you've made you choice to insure you make it work. good luck.
  • Great replies here. I like the recommendation of Fiona Harold's book too. It's true that life coaching isn't for everyone but if you need a helping hand with finding what you want and help with setting goals and exploring what gets in the way plus options to move forward, then life coaching sounds ideal. Life coaches tend to focus on moving forward whereas Counsellors look at the past more (particularly great for past emotional issues). The ICF are another good body to use as a benchmark when looking for a coach (if you can't get a personal recommendation). I've had life coaching and it's certainly helped me with all sorts of areas in my life. It's true that life coaches shouldn't give advice as you are the expert for your life. Instead a life coach asks you lots of questions to help you come up with your own answers and goals. Also most life coaches offer a free initial session so this is a great way to speak to a few to find the best one for you. Glad to see some above for you to speak to and whilst remaining impartial, I recently qualified as one too so please feel free to PM me if you'd like more info. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and wishing you all the best. :-)

Before you spend your cash, perhaps doing a cost benefit analysis and thorough risk assessment of all your options would narrow things down a bit. Another trick is to decide where you want to be in, say, ten years time and work back through all the steps you need to take to acheive that.

I used one a few years ago and it's one of the best things I have ever done. They gave me a set of tools that I now use throughout my life so it wasn't just the coaching at the time that was useful.

Mine got me to identify 3 areas of my life i wanted to progress. I chose health, finances and the country I lived in. We then broke these things down into manageable tasks and chunks and over a 12 week period I tackled the tasks one by one until eventually I reached the point that I wanted to be at.

I worked incredibly hard at it and I have to say it transformed my whole life. Once I applied the theory of it, it was quite easy.

Definitely depends on the practitioner, but I have recommended life coaching to 2 close friends who had a similar experience to me
