Parking for free in London (coming from M3)

Hi
Taking kids to Science Museum next week & was wondering about free parking in London.
Coming from Southampton up M3 & usually park at Kew Gardens but underground into London takes an age - so was wondering if I can get any closer to central London & park for free (will probably be a week day)

I would recommend going on a Sunday as not only is there free parking on single yellow lines etc (although do watch out for the exact regulations on the notice plates) but also traffic is much lighter. We lived near Basingstoke & I always used to take our kids to the Science Museum & V&A on a Sunday & drive straight into South Kensington & park within walking distance.0
