Somerset - nice areas to live?

My husband and I are thinking of relocating to Somerset and have absolutely no idea what are the nicer areas to move to. We plan to spend a couple of days there next month to have a look around but would appreciate some advice on where to look and where to avoid. Thanks.

From my limited experience I got the impression that even the worst areas of the county are nice when compared with places like Swindon (for example).
But the point of my reply is that Somerset is not a county that you can commute across. You can't freely chose to relocate to West Somerset if you need access to Bristol.
What is your motivation for moving there? Do you have a job to commute to, or will you need to find one when you get there?
If retiring there, do you need access to shops. Do you need to make it easy for family to visit you by rail etc
All of these are going to influence what location works best0 -
Some more info would help.
City or rural?
Working or retired?
Good links to anywhere in particular?
Price range?0 -
I'm originally from Midsomer Norton. Pretty much everywhere around that part of Somerset and the Mendips is pleasant and there is easy access to Bath and Bristol.
But as others have said we need more info about you and your requirements and I can reiterate what was said about it not being a county to commute across.0 -
There's a huge difference between living in the wilds of Exmoor and on the balmy borders with Dorset or Devon.
Unless you're a twitcher or seriously into coarse fishing, you might want to give the Levels a miss, due to their propensity to collect water. The area around Hinckley Point isn't terribly popular or picturesque either.
You may consider Bridgwater worth avoiding too, as it isn't particularly great, even without the smell of British Celanese. Also, most people mis-spell it.
The rest of Somerset is pretty good, though not quite as good as Devon.0 -

Oh, I've just remembered, the area around Yeovilton is flown over very regularly by helicopters, which can be annoying to some people.
It was certainly something we considered an issue when looking at a couple of properties in that area.:(0 -
thank you for all your replies.
About us. I would need to find a part time job. I currently work in an office so flexible about what I next do.
My husband needs to have access to either Exeter or Bristol airports.
Looking for somewhere semi rural - would rural be too out of the way? I like walking my dogs so would like access to walking areas, walking to local shops etc.
Don't really want to be in a busy area, just somewhere nice to live and quiet (ish).
Does this help?
We may also consider Gloucestershire, shall I put up a separate post for that area?0 -
I think you need to make more of an effort to work out what you need out of the move before asking us for recommendations on a specific area - simply saying you want to move from somewhere (we don't know where) to random counties really isn't the right way to achieve anything. Every county in the UK could fit the requirements you've given us so far - what are your reasons for having selected Somerset/Gloucestershire so far?0

I used to live in Highbridge , it was and probably still is , roughNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0
