Hi everyone.
I'm just after a bit of advice. I want to do some temp nannying work over the summer and need to perfect my CV. If you have a nanny or other in house childcarer, please can you let me know the answers to these questions?
Can you let me know what skills and qualities you look for also what duties (besides childcare) you expect?
Thanks!

do you have any nannying qualifications? I'd look for previous experience, references and see what I thought about you and how you'd fit in with my family. A lot of hiring a nanny is about gut instinct once the qualifications and references have been checked. As for other duties - a nanny should only have responsibility for the child/children and their things so washing and ironing their clothes maybe or tidying their room/s and cooking for them. A nanny is not employed to do odd jobs for the rest of the family.
If you're not qualified and you're employed as a mother's help then duties may be different. You shouldn't have sole charge of under 5s and may be asked to do more household chores.
I would probably use an agency rather than do it privately as that way you get some support.0 -
I would look for
Refrences,
Qualifactions,
Experience,
First Aid trained,
Questions I would ask like
1) What is your knowledge on child development?
2) What activites would you engage my child in?
3) What is your view on discpline and managinge childs behavoiur?
4) Could you give me an example of a healthy meal?
5) Can you tell me about Early Learning Goals?
6) wHY DO YOU ENJOY BEING A NANNY?
I would also see how you get on with my children at the interview, and run police CRB checks.0 -
go on https://www.nannyjob.co.uk for more info. i worked as a nanny for 3 years - you need qualifications in childcare, otherwise you would be a mothers help, most families want you to have experience, esp when you are looking after samll childrne and babies, a CRB (police check) references.
as a nanny you may also be expected to do some housework like the kids washing etc
good luck x0 -

Good luck0 -
Make sure you're clear at interviews that you'll only do child related stuff, so cooking /cleaning up after /children's laundry. Nothing else.
It's amazing how people see nanny as mother's help / cleaner."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -

Only an agency/employer can CRB (and list 99), you can't CRB yourself. Everytime you get a new post you should be CRB checked as they are only valid for one employer. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

This isnt strictly true
If you join an agency then yes, most require you to have a childcare qual of some kind
but you can be a nanny without quals, lots of families will go for extensive childcare experience and good references over quals
or maybe you could be working towards a childcare qual ( as i am and I nanny for 3 families)
you can place private ads on https://www.gumtree.com https://www.netmums.com https://www.nannyjob.co.uk https://www.vivastreet.co.uk to name a few !
The difference between a nanny and mothers help, is that a nanny is usually sole charge,a mothers help is when the parent is at home, and needs some childcare ( but not sole charge) and some household chores
both may or may not have quals but its the job description that makes the role different, not necessarily the level of quals0 -
It may sound obvious but no one has mentioned it so far. Top thing for me was whether or not the person really appeared to love children and want to be a nanny - think sadly some girls just do it by default. If you can demonstrate a genuine love of children rather than just wanting a way to earn money/keep yourself occupied till you find a man to keep you (yes I have seen some like that) then you are a long way there.
Make sure your employer even for a short period is prepared to give you a written statement of duties and pay and that they are prepared to operate PAYE properly on your salary (another reasion to use an agency).0
