Had enough of the poor-quality double-glazing window

Dear all,

I live in a house which is close to the motor way. I bought the house two years ago, and did not realise it is so noisy to hear the cars dashing away every day.

I checked my window, it is a double glazing one. But I can feel it is not good quality to reduce the noise level. So I definitely need to find a local window company to replace my 4 windows facing the motor way. For the 4 windows, two have a size of 1.2x1.8, and the other two are small (1.2*0.4).

Can I ask if 1) it is possible to reduce the noise level by using better quality double glazing or triple glazing windows? 2) do you know any local window company in the London area to do the job at a good price?

My understanding is double glazing can assist with sound reduction if the thickness of the two panes of glass is different. This, I assume, prevents the glazed unit acting as a drum, or amplifier, of the sound.

A separate issue is mass, or weight, is required to deaden sound. In this respect upvc window profiles are poor because they lack substance. In theory a wooden window would be better, as would the introduction of laminated glass into whatever window you choose.

Moving on, in theory, triple glazed windows should be better than double glazed. Also, heavy curtains will assist.

Good fitting is also important. If unsealed gaps exist between the windows and the opening this is a route for the sound to penetrate.

Finally, discuss all the points I have made with your chosen supplier to check/verify/add items.
