We're planning a hen night in York, last weekend in July.
Any ideas on cheap accommodation (we tried the Travelodge but it's full!)
Ideas for fun places to go and interesting things to see..... also, being a hen do, any good pubs, clubs & yummy places to eat. :A

Fellini's is a good Italian restaurant, went there for my hen do 7 yrs ago(!) and also more recently. There is a Holiday Inn, I think thats where we stayed, it's near the racecourse. Also have you tried the Tourist Info people for ideas?
Travelodge don't tend to take 1 night bookings on a weekend, could that be the problem?
There are loads of good places to eat and drink, IMHO.
Have fun!0 -
I was at Uni there, though its some time ago, but I do go back most years and I'm there in June so I'll update you. There were 365 pubs when I was there ( there's a couple we missed) and at weekends the action was on the Micklegate run, though it wasn't recommended for students. I assume that most of the old clubs are still going albeit under different names. Have a walk round the shambles in the afternoon, then take tea in Betties and make sure you get a window seat.0

We used to start in the pubs at the town end of Bootham, then pub crawl into town, down Coney Street, across Lendal Bridge towards Micklegate, then catch the bus out to Ikon & Diva at Clifton Moor. Those were the days!!0

The Spread Eagle and the Bluebell were 2 of my favourites. Proper beer.0

There are several Travel Lodges, Travel Inn, Premier Lodges etc. Also a Ramada and Novotel in the centre.0

Come stay at the local RAF camp, im sure your presence would be appreciated.0

Thanks! All great ideas.0

Like Party_Animal I was at uni in York, graduated 6 years ago so I hope my info isn't too out-of-date.
If you're going the last week in july this is after the end of uni term so you could try the uni itself for cheap accommodation. Not sure what's on offer these days - they've knocked bits down and rebuilt them since I was there. Also not sure what the policy is on accommodating people who are not there for conferences. However I did just find the following link to local accommodation, having done a search on the York Uni website:
http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/accom/returner/usefullocal.htm
If you do manage to find some accommodation at the uni, the campus is a 10 minute bus ride or £5 minicab fare from the city centre. There may also be accommodation available in Fairfax House which is nearer the centre (nb. don't get this confused with York's other Fairfax House - there is some kind of historic building of the same name which has nothing to do with the university!)
I second Party_Animal's recommendations for the Spread Eagle and the Bluebell. Another interesting pub is the Lendal Cellars (for atmosphere - can't remember what the beer is like!) If you do end up staying on the university campus, there are 2 pubs in the village of Heslington next door to the uni - the Charles XII and the Deramore Arms (the Charles is better and has a decent beer garden AFAIR).Operation Get in Shape

Micklegate is a longish street to the north of the city, with lots of pubs. The idea is to do a pub crawl along the length of the road, having a pint and a shot in each pub, collecting stamps along the way which can be redeemed for in a T-shirt which says something like "I survived the Micklegate Run".
Never tried it myself. More interested in quality than quantity, even when a skint student :beer:Operation Get in Shape

Coh I've spent some time in the Charles. The Lendal Cellars are superb with their barrel vaulted ceilings. The other pub on the bridge is great. Its always in the GBG. Is it the Maltings? And the Black Swan at Peasholme Green. I'm up there in June for a long wet weekend!0
