It is the incessant barking all the time! He has a loud, booming bark and it is really annoying me to the point of wanting to leave!

Pardon my ignorance but I thought if a dog barked, it was letting you know of something, a threat or an intruder. No.. this dog just barks for the sake of it and the owners must be deaf and/or ignorant because they let him bark for hours. I can hear it when he indoors (and I am next door) and it can be heard for several miles when I come home from work.

It is horrible living here since they got a dog and now they are 'back yard breeding' him! I just hope they do not get their pick of the litter so that will mean there will be two dogs!!

I have a dog myself, he only barks if there is something wrong. He can go days without barking and as soon as he does, I go to him and see what is WRONG! Rather than ignore it. To nip it in the bud from a pup, I said "NO" and made a hand gesture to reinforce the NO

What can I do about the noise next door?

  • Yes, I have been in that position myself, it sends you crazy BUT the dog must be suffering, can you see in to their garden/house see what is happening?

We have neighbours with jack russells they let out at 10pm... Yap yap yap yap yap yap. Some of us have to get up early. Do the neighbours care? Apparently not!

This is what you can expect from neighbours with dogs.

Not really much you can do except keep a noise diary and phone the RSPCA (to check the dogs welfare)

The dog runs up the top of the garden to the metal gate and starts barking when there is nothing there! They leave the faecal matter in the garden as well... like it is supposed to be some form of artwork!

Get in contact with the Environmental Health Dept of your local council. They can quite rightfully visit the house and tell the dog owner to sort the barking problem out. You do not have to put up with this annoyance. If the neighbour lets it continue the council can ultimately bring him to court for breaking bye laws regarding noise control.
Also about the dirt in the back yard - tell whoever you speak to in Env.Health that the neighbours don't clean up after their dog and that you can smell the mess from your side of the fence. It's not hygienic for sh*t to be left lying around and again Env.Health have the authority to tell the neighbour to clean the mess and keep it cleaned up. You will remain anonymous through this process and while the neighbour may suspect it's you they can't prove it. It's likely that other people in the vicinity are having to put up with the nuisance, not just you, so don't worry about your neighbour getting upset.

I think this is a bit unfair. I have a dog and have had quite a few over the years and never let them keep barking. I have only ever had dogs that bark for a reason but I always see what the reason is and then ask the dog to be quiet.

My present dog will bark once if the doorbell rings. If he is indoors or in the garden and hears a strange noise he will bark but doesn't keep barking. If he barks more than say 2 or 3 times I will stop him. My neighbour comments that she rarely hears him and if she does she knows that there will probably be someone around - I think it makes her feel a bit more secure.

The neighbours across the road have two boxer dogs which bark for hours on end. The owners used to be out at work all day but for the last 6 months the girl has been at home as they have a baby. She never stops the dogs barking though.

Often they bark quite late at night. I don't go to bed before 11pm and frequently lay in bed listening to their barking unable to get to sleep. Living next door to them must be hell.

I believe complaints have been made but nothing has happened. They have been there for about 4 years now.

I have thought about complaining but would hate to think they would be forced to get rid of the dogs

My neighbours work, he works full time in another city and commutes everyday and she works PART TIME!

You are exactly the same as me, when my dog barks, I go to him to see and ask what is wrong, nine times out of ten it is something trivial. If there is a knock at the door, he will jump up and look at the door and go to it.. he will not bark.

  • Poor dog, it's obviously not being looked after and is probably barking from loneliness, boredom and fear. Report them to the local dog warden and/or the RSPCA. There are welfare laws in place now which include exercising dogs and not leaving them outside in their own ***t. Make sure you also let the authorities know about the breeding. Sound like disgusting people.

Dogs don't only bark to alert, they can learn that if they bark, somebody comes to them. The behaviour doesn't have to be rewarded by the human coming to them very often for the behaviour to be repeated. If they've learnt this, the bark will often be a series of barks then silence while they listen for a response, then more barks. They can repeat this for hours, and ofcourse when somebody does eventually respond, its just reinforced what the dog was thinking - keep barking and somebody will come. It is very hard to break this behaviour once its started.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Rather ironically the OP states that they have a dog too.

Thats my experiance too. Woman in flat opposite had two yappy little westies. Non stop, yap yap yap, bark bark, bark. Bloody dogs!

At my mothers place theres a woman who lives opposite with her kids and they leave the jack russell tethered outside in the front garden all day in summer. It just yaps non stop yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap. All. Day. Long. You can hear it down the other end of the street.

I wouldn't hesitate to complain! Councils will take action over noise abatement. Dog owners need to learn to take responsibility for their mutts especially all the cr.ap in the park. If they get threatened to have their dogs removed it might make them more responsible owners. Sounds like hell on earth to live near them.
