Xmas Saver!
Hello Everyone,

I was just using my computer as normal, had a couple of windows open & was also watching catch up T.V, when all of a sudden the sound on the T.V programem I was watching just started to make a constant oooooo noise. The laptop is un responsive to any keys, I have pressed the off switch & disconnected it from the electric. I have put it in the other room as it's a awful noise.

Is there any way back from this?. Anyone know what happened?

I am now on my linux tiny, tiny 8inch Acer Aspire the first model made!

Thank's xxx

  • Start with some useful information, like, what sort of computer is it? Is it still making an awful noise, even disconnected and in the other room? Have you tried holding down the power switch for several seconds to force a closedown?

    Thank You,

I just fetched it back from the bedroom & it was still making the awful oooo sound.

I did try lots of times to press & hold down the off button but it did not work, so when I just fetched it back I tried again & this time it switched off.

I am back on it now, it started up ok again.

My Laptop is a Packard Bell Easynote TX86 i5 Processor.

The laptop does feel hot, could this be the reason for it to throw the fit it just did?

    Thank's

Can you elaborate on the 'ooooooo' noise? High pitched, low pitrched, coming from where on the laptop?
If you restart it, does the noise come back?
I'm hazarding a guess at a failing fan bearing, which would explain why it's overheating. Have you cleaned the fan and ducting recently?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Thank you,

I will try & explain the sound.

One of the windows I had open was catch up T.V I was watching/listening to it & clicking to & from different open windows.

Now I was writing a email when it happened in a different open window, & the sound on the T.V episode held onto a sound which sounded like a oooo medium pitched sound, & everything stopped except for this sound which come from the T.V episode.

Nothing worked, the wireless mouse did not work, the mouse track pad on the laptop did not move, the off button was pressed & held for a long time & it would not switch off, I pressed & released the off button quickly this did not work either, I un pluged the computer from the electric but it carried on because the battery was charged, all it was doing is holding onto the sound from the T.v episode it was really odd.

No I have not cleaned the fan out, have no idea you could do this

  • I'm guessing a lockup with your browser running the TV catchup site. If it got into a loop, it could have been running at 100% CPU causing the whole thing to get hot. Use it for a while - if everything seems normal, there should be nothing to worry about. All computers crash at some time.

    Thank You

I hope it will behave as I could never afford such a good laptop as this again lol

I've got three windows open no T.V now lol but it does feel hot, not as hot as it was though.

  • Also worth checking the fan, if it has one.

When it's on, see if there's a fan outlet ie. feel all around it and see if there's air blowing out of a grille somewhere. If so, turn the laptop off and hoover the fan outlet to suck out the dust.

Laptop fans can get clogged up with dust and stop turning and then the laptop overheats and locks up in the way you've described.

Also if you put your ear close to the laptop when it's running you might be able to hear the fan (if there is one - not all laptops have them) and if it sounds like it's labouring or turning unevenly it might need replacing. Not really a DIY job if you're not a geek, but shouldn't be expensive.
