Bizarre question about home insurance

Hi, could use some advice regarding home insurance... Here is some background...

Early last year we suspected that our then cleaner stole a number of items (total value of about £500). We reported to the police, cleaner was taken to court some months later but was found not guilty. We did not make any claim on our house insurance.

Fast forward to present day, our home insurance and contents insurance is due for renewal. One of the questions when comparing quotes is always something like " have you, or anyone normally living with you, suffered any loss, damage or liability anywhere during the last five years, whether insured or not?"

Where do I stand? Technically has there actually been a loss, as the suspect was found not guilty in a court of law so has there been any loss as such?

How do I answer the question? I have six years no claims bonus so I don't want to increase my premium if not necessary!

Many thanks

    Thanks for the replies.

How do the insurance companies typically view these losses even if a claim isn't made? I presume there will be an additional loading on the premium?

With regards to NCB, I still retain this as no claim was made?

Sorry in advance for my questions, I am sure they are coming across as pretty silly

Correct no claim but you have still suffered a loss and needs to be declared.

Otherwise your paying for insurance that may never payout.

Nothing silly about the questions. Much better to take advice now than suffer down the line.

And failing to disclose it could come back to bite you. If, for example you were to be broken into thiis coming year, and make a substantial claim the insurers could well enquire with the police and find out about the previous theft.

If you tell them about it now they may well increase the premium a little, but they may also ask you to review and improve security measures (locks, alarm etc) which itself would be no bad thing in the long term.
