Faulty tv Currys refuse to replace.

Hi we purchased a tv/dvd combi for my Daughters xmas present back in November last year. Tried to use the dvd player for the first time yesterday and it doesn't work. We took it back to the currys store where we brought it from with the receipt and they have refused to exchange it saying that they have to send it away for repair. Can they do this as that then leaves us with no tv. They couldn't even say how long it would take. Any advice appreciated.

Yes they can. Can't you use your PC as a TV whilst it is away?Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

In short, yes they can. Legally you are entitled to a remedy, one of repair, replacement or refund (possibly partial dependent on usage). Whilst you can state your preference you cannot insist as the retailer is entitled to choose whichever is the least costly to them.
Bear in mind though any remedy must not cause you a significant inconvenience and must be carried out within a reasonable period.
BTW, if you bought the TV for your daughter why does that leave you without a TV?0 -
OP, try putting the dvd in with the other side facing you.
It seems that some of these things work differently to how people might intuitively think.0 -
We have got 2 TVs, same brand, identical to look at but about 6 months different in age with a single digit model number difference. The DVDs go in different waysOP, try putting the dvd in with the other side facing you.
