Insurance for home improvement

Hi

We are shortly going to start some home improvement works including moving some steel joists around in the kitchen and demolishing walls. Have got planning etc and builder has relevant insurance but do you think it is worth taking out specific insurance to cover ourselves in an armageddon - bedroom falls into the kitchen situation? If so can anyone recommend some good insurers? Thanks

What sort of contract do you have with the builder?

That is why your builder has public liability insurance.

You do need to let your current insurers (or potential new ones) that you're carrying out structural alterations.

Your contract with the builder should state insuring responsibility, you may also want to ask the builder about whether he has contract works cover, depending on the size of the job.

I'd want to know it's a well established firm, VAT reistered, registered with trade bodies and with a good local rep, for this sort of work.
