It depends on the Game etc. Remember, many games need the internet to download the adverts.....Many games are free because they hope to gain commissions/royalties via someone hopefully clicking on one of their adverts.

Away from Games, other services obviously rely on the internet; after all Tablets/iPads are internet based computers at the end of the day.

Other services, including the Games Centre, may need you to sign into your AppleID at some point for whatever reason(s) and may need to download something that verifies/asks if you are over 18 for example (i.e. check details against those submitted beforehand).

Even to get books onto her tablet, she will need internet access of some kind - I think you will very quickly get bored of her turning up at your front door asking to load something onto her tablet. I would say the first thing to do is to help her get signed up for a cheap broadband package.

After that, the next question is how big a tablet does she want?

    reading books

Without 'net access the least expensive option would be... paperback. Next step up is a bog-standard Kindle 3G; not a tablet, but at least one isn't paying through the nose for mobile data!

For anything else, your options are as follows:
    • Wi-Fi hotspots
    • Home broadband
    • Mobile broadband (simultaneously most expensive and least useful)

I also go with the idea of the neighbour getting her own broadband otherwise I can see you being constantly asked to download this game/book for her at all times of the day unless of course you dont mind doing that for her.

Would she want to physically look at the tablets eg in store at currys etc ?
  • Thanks I don't mind helping my neighbour out with this although she is looking for some kind of Internet but she doesn't like the idea of contracts so will keep looking ans asking questions

  • As presented, a Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD might be the best answer.

When the need for connectivity becomes obvious, while not necessarily the best value, a MiFi and PAYG data would meet that need without commitment.

As a content consumption device the Kindle Fire HD or the lower price Fire is excellent.
