The affected card was being used exclusively for business purposes since last December (was used for shopping etc before that, however) and I can recall only two places where the details were passed to a human without any encryption: Spandex and Amari (a while ago) and more recently a local state college.

This happened to me a couple of years back. Three 02 top ups were taken from my card fraudulently, and then a week later £480 was taken by Ryanair. I hadn't picked up on the top ups as I regularly topped up my phone by card. My bank reimbursed the money pretty quickly though

Happened to me a few days ago, x2 £10 top ups with O2.

However the card they used was one I have never actually used in "real life". It belongs to an account which I hardly ever use, and only have for logging into online banking and having my "cashback" paid into.

How they got the 3 digit code on the back of the card is a complete and utter mystery (unless O2 don't ask for that of course).

My bank have been fantastic though, easy to get through, sorted it out ASAP and money was back in the account next day. Said they would claim the money back from O2.
  • This happened to me today. 3 payments to "O2 UK PAY & GO" and 1 payment to "EE & T-MOBILE". I bank with Halifax. Contacted the fraud service and they refunded the money quickly. They informed me it's happening alot and it's from number crunching machines rather than carelessness with security. It's kind of scary that it's unavoidable but at least they know about it and sort it.

It is 100% avoidable by going to an ATM, get the cash and then pay in cash for a top up where you see the top up sign ( most high street stores)
  • Glad it's not just me then! Luckily TSB did an automated fraud call to me this evening as they had flagged up 3 such £10 O2 transactions. I used to find those calls annoying but now I really appreciate their service. They say they'll refund the money right away and cancel the card, apparently the pattern is 3 transactions to start with.
    Scary stuff!

Oh you are so bloody pompous and self-righteous aren't you! Guess what - I don't have a PAYG phone, I have 2 contract phones, both on Orange/EE, for me & my business. I got hit with 3 x £10 debits for O2 PAYG - explain that then....

Santander fraud guys called me even before I spotted it, I check statements online daily, cancelled card & refunded the cash straight away.

I do like it when people can't see a bit of sensible advice even when it hits them in the face..............

Looks like this is still a problem 2 years on! I've just seen 5 such transactions from O2 Pay & Go on my account - £110 in total.
