Does the Nokia Lumia 920 Proximity Sensor mean you can't use a screen protector?

Hi, I got the above phone yesterday. I also bought a case & screen protector so it doesn't get scratched.
Every time I get a call the screen goes black so I can't end the call or get the screen to come back up.
Upon googling i've discovered it's an issue with the proximity sensor & that the screen is meant to come back after you have moved the phone away from your ear.
I wondered whether this was due to the screen protector so removed it which has solved the problem.
I'm now worried about my lovely new phone getting a scratched screen & wondered whether anyone else had a Nokia Lumia & whether they are having the same problem.
Has anyone managed to use a screen protector?

I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.

I have an older Lumia 610 and I've put a screen protector on that and it seems to work fine. Although it's a model with fewer features, it does dim when I put it to my ear so I think it has a proximity sensor too.0

No mention of such problems on the Nokia board when people have been asking for advice.

But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0 -
The screen protector I have for my 820 has some cut outs around the camera and sensor. Maybe you just need a different type of screen protector.0

I've no idea if the screen protector is causing a problem, you're doing something wrong, or the phone is faulty but I will say this...
To my mind putting a plastic screen protector on a half way decent modern phone with a hardened glass screen is like putting tatty old rugs over a new carpet to protect it - defeating the object of having something nice to see. Certainly there will be less chance of damage (although the chances of scratching a glass screen phone are low unless you really are very clumsy indeed) but you'll never see the thing at it's best - everything will be seen through a plastic screen protector.
I've never put screen protectors on tablets or touch screen phones and none of mine have ever got damaged. Any knock hard enough to crack a screen is likely to do so whether or not there is a screen protector and fingers don't scratch glass even if they drag sand across it.0
