Changing from prepayment meter
Options
Hi all, some help on changing from a prepayment to an ordinary metered supply (for my brother)
The debt has been paid in full, verified by the gas company. They wont change to an ordinary meter as they claim he does not satisfy their credit check criteria. Is this correct?
Would he be able to approach another gas company, with probably a better tariff. My brother was informed by gas company he is paying exactly the same as if he were metered.
He has done all the sensible tasks such as servicing the boiler, ensuring emissions are within correct tolerance, heating on timer, only used in the evening after work, off during the night, and he finds the bills still high in comparison to others (he is paying £20pw on meter)
Any advice would be great
Thanks

Prepays are not too bad nowadays as they are on "standard " tariff like most of credit meters are. Credits can get a 6% reduction with direct debit (B.Gas.) and other bits off with dual fuel, paperless billing. Also online top ups are available with BG,EON and Scot Power to avoid messing about topping up. If your supplier wont let you move back to a credit meter try another supplier and see what they say.0

Most suppliers will run a credit check before they agree to swap a meter plus some charge £50-£60 to change the meter. You need to remember that with PAYG or Pay on Bill gas useage at this time of the year is about 5 times what it is in the summer. Your brother needs to take a look at his credit file. No point in making furter applications until you know what the black mark is.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

He would likely be a decline for the current supplier, due to previous history of it been fitted. Sap has a credit rating system built inDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Think you. Will pass on your advise. Interesting that prepaid are comparable to metered, I always thought prepaid was higher. That first step is a step closer

Hi,
I'm on prepaid meters because they were here when I moved into my flat. I tired to get them changed a couple of times but they were asking for several hundred ££ in advance for me to be able to do so which I just couldn't afford. Maybe there were problems with whoever lived my flat before me - I guess there must have been for the prepayment meters to be installed.
I'm on a standard tarriff so paying just that rate. In my case I quite like putting a certain amount at the start of each month and knowing I don't have to worry about bills for gas and electric. So for now it suits me. I'm careful about usage so rarely have to find any extra money for the meters.
I hope it will reassure you that there can be some benefits, they aren't always as bad as they're painted to be.0 -

Only the current supplier can arrange to change the meter ... but he could switch to a supplier of his choice.
This link describes how the major suppliers handle such a reguest to change the meter.

But getting the best tariff is probably more important, so use a comparison site.
(and then check with the supplier of choice that they would be prepared to change the meter)0 -

Sorry sacsquacco, this facility isn't available with us yet.
It's something we're certainly looking at but not sure when it will be available.
