Does anyone know if I can change my settings to cut out all the colourful stuff, side banner etc? I've looked in my profile options and can't see a way of doing this.

Since swapping from a USB dongle to a Huawei Mobile WiFi thing, I seem to be getting through the "free" (i.e. included in purchase price) 1GB download allowance rather quickly. 1GB used to last me almost a month, but I've used over a third of it already, in three days, which I can't understand. I'm not doing anything different to usual. I've checked I am the only user hooked up to it, and I turn it off at night, so was wondering whether PAYG uses more data than contract, although I know that's probably a silly question :o.

(When the 1GB is gone I will put my contract SIM out of my old dongle into the Huawei, having re-negotiated a better deal with 3.)

Anyway in an effort to keep my usage down I thought setting my usual websites to plain text might help. Is this possible for MSE please?
:D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Not such a strange request. Blind people and text to speech programs used this.

An old vesion of netscape, Then there is a product called linx, but a bit outdated.

    Then there is this http://news.cnet.com/8301-13880_3-9837331-68.html

the way i would do it is in firefox, under options, options, content, untick load images automatically, and untick enable java script.

Not sure if this means they are not downloaded just not displayed, or just not downloaded at all?

another way on firefox would be to use the greasemonkey plugin and program that up

Thanks for that bluesnake. I use Firefox, but that seems a bit of a faff, although useful to know about.

I'd hoped there might be a quickie clicky hidden somewhere in the user options. No such luck then :(.

mate, takes 2 seconds to get there and untick 2 boxes "the way i would do it is in firefox, under options, options, content, untick load images automatically, and untick enable java script."
  • If you're a Chrome user, try an extension called Stylebot. Use it to select and hide any areas of the page you don't want. Not quite plain text, but a much tidier page.

Other Forums I've seen (which also use the same vBulletin software as this one) do have an "archive" mode which is plain text. Alternatively they have "skins" which are more suitable for mobiles.

However, for whatever reason, it looks like these features aren't enabled here (or if they are, I've not managed to find them). There is an "Archive" link at the bottom but it doesn't work in the same way as in other forums I've seen.

using adblockplus gets rid of most of the images, can't get rid of the text on right though.

If you've got Firefox+Adblock Plus you might find you can do something similar by adding the Element Hiding Helper extension. It's some time since I used it, but it works on the same principle as Stylebot, just less powerful.

Grease monkey script is good for fire fox. Doesn't take long to work out.
