Dog with upset tummy

Hi
My terrier has a sensitive tummy, when we first got him as a Rescue he had diarrhea for quite a while and it took us ages to find a food that agreed with him. Last weekend he was a bit off colour and since them he has had runny poos - not all the time - some are solid.
Last night after his tea he didnt make it outside before he had to go and it was very watery.
He is bouncy and full of life, doesnt have any pain, drinking and eating normally. I just wondered if you would take him to the vet or if you would just let it run its course.
I am thinking that he has probably eaten something - he is terrible for picking up and eating things while we are out walking.
We have been careful about what we are feeding him, dry biscuits, a bit of chicken and rice but thats all. Just wondering how long we should leave it before we get him checked out. He is absolutely terrified of the vets and I dont want to stress him out unnecessarily.

You might find that the chicken is a bit rich for his tummy. You could try him for a few days on a mix of brown bread (rip it into small pieces) mixed with Chappie. Alternatively a cereal based food like Wilson's sheepdog mix with some Chubb roll mixed into it.
One or t'other has always worked for us :j0 -
is he up to date with his worming? mine got terrible diarrhea from hookworm, and a dose of drontel sorted that out.
normally for bad upset tums, whick rocky is rather prone to, I starve him for 24 hours then give a small meal or two or scrambled egg before starting small meals of chicken or white fish and rice. If the upset tum persists after that, I would make a vet appointment.0 -
My dog recently suffered from something similar - I took him to the vet and it turned out his anal glands were very blocked, which the vet was able to sort there and then.
Plain rice and boiled chicken also works wonders at helping upset tummies :-)
Hope he gets better soon!0 -
I got my dog from a rescue centre too. He had runny poos aswell. I put him onto Wainwrights Chicken & Rice kibble & give a little of the Wainwrights meat as a topper. Feeding him steamed chicken and rice didn't help.
He has a sensitive tummy too & what I find helps is a couple of tablespoons of natural live yogurt twice a day.
Obviously you could adjust the amount, but he vary rarely suffers with tummy issues since giving him the yoghurt.0 -
Thanks all, good advice there, I didnt know about the live yoghurt - might give that a go.
He seems a bit better today, had no diarrhea so far. He is up to date with his worming, had a Drontal tablet 19th January. Think I will leave it until after the weekend and see how he is.
One of my friends has suggested giving 3 or 4 small meals a day for a while, timing it so there is a gap before or after his walks, which is worth a try. We usually feed one meal a day because that seemed to be how he had been fed previously.0 -
I always try a couple of teaspoonfuls of Slippery Elm food (Holland & B sell it) or 1 teasp of slippery elm powder (the SEF is not as strong- mixed with wheat i think) mixed with live yoghurt is very helpful. Or sprinkle over drykibble.
If that doesn't work it's a vet trip!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

We have rescue dog and he has dodgy stomach aggravated by the fact he picks up stuff when out. We took him at first to vet then realised it would just pass. Vet suggested smaller meals and chappie. We give him 2 or 3 smaller meals depending on how he is looking/activity etc. He only gets dry food and a bit of chicken tin( never any beef/ lamb etc as it aggravates it) and once we found a food he is settled on we dont change it. he cant have anything extra like dental chews or bone biscuits that are black or green etc. My MIL and FIL had builders in when he was there and they gave him a choclate biscuit -they said they thought he was dying it was so bad -but no food first 24 then rice then next day boiled chicken and rice was back on his feet. He can still get it every couple months but either cos he is scared v badly by something -like Halloween or if he went for a very big run and overdid it or ate something he shouldn't have.0
