But it's Irish govt owned so not quite the same as public sector.

    And not quite private.

Homes without power in Northern Ireland
Twenty crews from ESB Networks have been dispatched to locations across Northern Ireland to help restore power to homes and businesses, following damage caused by severe winds and blizzard conditions last night.
Hundreds of Northern Ireland Electricity engineers and emergency crews have been working since first light to assess the damage and start the repair process where it has been safe to do so.
Up to 100,000 customers were left without power after overnight weather problems.
Damage has been caused by flying debris and high winds, including broken electricity lines and damage to poles and other equipment.
ESB Networks and NIE have a long-standing arrangement to provide assistance to one another in emergency situations.

Severe weather my backside, don't believe the hype, inadequate infrastructure, poor quality materials, poor medium to long term planning, the list is endless.

So when last were Oslo/Helsinki/Warsaw/St Petersburg completely without electricity in a short period of inclement weather?

A quick hunt on google shows that Oslo and St Petersburg have had power failures in the recent past. They may not have been caused by cold weather, but I'm sure the burghers of Oslo were not consoled by the fact that it was act of man rather than act of God.
At the end of the day, if lightening strikes a power line there will be a problem. It doesn't mean the system is fundamentally flawed. Sometimes, stercus just accidit.

the snow caused some probs to my guttering, does that mean im going to spend more money putting up some snow barriers on my roof for the odd time we have snow, think not and so its the same with nie, they arent going to spend lots of money for these odd bad weather days and just as well cause we would all end up paying for it!!
