Do not, under any circumstances, buy a Karcher.

    In all my professional career I have never come across a company whose business ethos appears to be;

"We are determined to offer you p-ss poor service at all times. We are committed to bu--ering around customers at all times. It is our desire that customers take their business elsewhere."

Karcher re-define the meaning of arrogance, contempt...

Yes, I have had run ins with Karcher. Trust me, any brand is better than Karcher.

Our current vac (Hoover) still seems to be working fine, though OH swears it keeps cutting out and needs replacing. Funny, I used it today, and it didn't cut out. :D

Many modern vacuum cleaners have a thermal cut out that turns off when they're overheating. Running for a very long time causes this. However, if the bag is full or the filters dirty, it can happen after not very long.

The other possibility is that the cable has a break inside it and needs replacing. Inspect the cable for obvious damage while unplugged. It certainly shouldn't have any cuts in it that expose the inner wires (knots and twisted bits are suspect too), and it should hold up easily to a firm pull on the plug and where it enters the appliance. If it looks ok, try running it while shaking the cable to see if that causes it to cut out as sometimes the damage is hidden.

Either way, I doubt your vacuum cleaner has a serious fault. Every single example of randomly cutting out I've seen has been one of these two possibilities so far.
  • Thanks to this thread, I'm looking into buying a Miele s766 on my next payday. How sad is it that I'm quite excited about the prospect of my first hoover haha!

I bought a Sebo D2 and am very happy with it. It has the longest power cable of any vac I could find and comes with lots of attachments. The cleaning performance is excellent also.

We have a Sebo upright, now at least 14 years old.

We also have a 25 year old Miele cylinder still working perfectly, and just 2 years back bought a Miele cat and Dog with the turbo brush......excellent on the stairs.

It depends what you do with it.

We have a Vax C91, which so far has been great (had it about a year).
I empty it when required OR at every second use. On that second use I give it a good clean out, including all the detachable filters inside.

I can't see it going wrong any time soon. It's quiet (compared with my Argos basic I had before) and is a great sucker.

I don't think I will ever go back to a bagged vacuum again.

Had our Miele at least 15 years. Never gone wrong. Still works as it did when new.

I'd never go for a bagless vac. They're totally unhygienic and you'll breath-up the dust particles (and anything else) you've just sucked-up.
  • If you still want a recommendation, here's mine:

Upright: Go for a Panasonic MC-UG302, which has 6.7m cord, 5 L bag capacity, stretch hose. You only have to read reviews to see how relable they are!

Cylinder: Morphy Richards 73111, on eBay for around £30, excellent compact vac. I have one & on ECO POWER it works great!

    Hope this helps!!!
