Open Driveway - Installing a gate

Hi Guys,

Recently purchased this 3 bed semi. It has a garage which is situated further back of the house and makes the driveway a bit too long.

All my neighbours have their garages adjacent to their houses and hence they only have a small narrow gate going to their back garden.

My side of the drive is actually a lot wider and with no gate making it a bit easy for anyone to walk right up to my kitchen door or enter my garden.

I intend to install a wide wooden gate just behind where you see the car parked in this picture. Do I need to check planning permissions?

I do intend to check with my neighbour on right side.

We have similiar set up and were told by local council 5 years ago that as long as below six feet and wasn't further forward than front of house no planning required.

I would phone your local council for a chat.

Thanks Cr1mson, it is not at the front so that base is covered. I was thinking more than 6 feet but can live with 6 feet. Will check with council.

Did you had any trouble with neighbour as the gate would be close to their boundary.

    Use a 6x6ft fencing panels with 2ft concrete bottoms..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Do you know where the boundary is? Who owns the drive? Is ownership split down the centre? Will the proposed gate be entirely on your own land? Does neighbour have a right of way across any of your land and if so will the gate obstruct that ROW?

Providing all those issues are cleared, then all that remains is to discuss with neighbour as a matter of courtesy.

    Thanks GM

It is all mine, not shared. And there is no right of way, they may have right to access in case of any repair work on their own house but it is nothing different than any other house in the area.

Drive leads to my garage and my garden only. I was planning to putting the gate post as close to their wall as possible and will check with them as a matter of courtesy.

The way I see it, this will make their house more secure as well as part of their garden and my drive is separated by a fence.

Wooden gates wide enough to get a car through will be heard and possibly felt by the neighbours when you open and close them. OK if you keep normal work hours or only use them in daytime.

    Just a thought. ;)
  • It is too narrow to get the car all the way in with ease anyway, will be almost impossible with a gate and I can live with that.

OP, are you sure that's the location for you. Hedges all around, now gates. I expect it's festooned with PIR security lights...:)

Lol gates and hedges first, lights to follow once I have saved up enough. Previous owners had a caravan and a few cars so it covered the drive and entrance. Without any cars it looks a bit bare and unsecure. It is a nice neighbourhood and everyone else already has gates and lights. All the other gates are standard narrow ones, my plot is a yad different for some reason.

Also with a privacy gate I can use the part of drive behind gates to merge in to back garden.
