Cheapest gas..

Options
l know this question has been asked lots of times before but how do l do a search for the cheapest gas suppliers, l've just had my gas bill  and it seems to be alot more than expected..
l'm with E ON at the moment and do not understand how they work bills out.. There seems to be a calculated price of gas used from december to mid january and then another price from mid january to march.. Tariff prices are different after january and a standing charge from january which l have not noticed before..
Which are the best suppliers to go with..

    Hi stingray 316

Sorry for the confusion caused by our bills.

We had a price increase on 18 January 2013. Therefore, your latest bill will charge for usage up to the increase at the old prices and then all usage after this time at the new prices.

At this time, we also replaced our former two tier pricing structure with a daily standing charge.

Previously, we charged the first number of kWh used at a higher rate. We've scrapped this and replaced it with a daily standing charge and all usage charged at a single unit rate.

We wrote to customers at the time to explain the changes.

Hope this makes things a bit clearer stingray. Give me a shout if still not sure as will be happy to help.

  • Thanks for clearing that up malc regarding the bill.
What l cannot understand is (and l hope you can answer this ) before the increase in mid january on the increased rate ... How do they know how much l used from December to mid january, l could have used more on the cheaper rate and less on the higher rate.. so my bill would be less.. Would'nt it..
    If that makes sense.

They dont which is why they estimate it. If you are aware of a price change coming up then entering a reading online, over the phone, etc. on the date of the change is the best way to guarantee you are charged the right amount.

Search for the cheapest tariff by putting your annual kWh usage and postcode into any comp site. Takes less than a minute. Then switch via a cashback site.

  • It seem like most gas suppliers are doing standard daily charge now, and the ones who are not will be soon.. are we better off this way or not.
One supplier that keeps on popping up on this site is EBICO, l've never heard of this supplier before so are these the cheapest ones, any folks on here with them who can tell us if they are better off now they changed to this supplier.

Ebico are only competitive if you are a very low user, because of their flat rate pricing.
S/S or NSC is a red herring. Itmakes no difference at all to the average user, as either way the total price will be the same within a few pence per year.

If you are a really low user of gas....Npower said in it's letter to me under £27 a month then Ebico might be a choice as they have no standing charges but you would have to compare online to see if it is worth it or not.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

    Hi stingray

As said above, where we don't have actual meter readings, we'll use estimates.

These estimates will be based on previous usage history. However, if you did take readings on this day, please let us have them. We'll be happy to re-bill to these.

    Hope this helps.

Switch via a comparison site using actual (not estimated) readings in KWH. The more often you read your meters the more accurate your bills will be and the fewer shocks you will have, suppliers only have to read every two years so some readings will be estimated (eg. during price change).
