which car(s) please?

I don't come onto this board very often, but would like to pick your brains please.
We (OH & me) need to make a decision about a car to suit us in retirement. We have run our old Toyota Previa into the ground, doing our own build.
We want a vehicle that will tow a trailer tent, and is comfortable for visits to care for / help with family.
We're not quite sure about our mileage as we settle into a more normal retirement, but we guess about 10k. annually
About 5k of this, we "need" this larger & more powerful type of car. For shorter journeys (shopping, entertainment, most visits) we could use a much smaller car.
(we already use public transport & bikes when we can, and mostly if we are going out separately can use one or the other)

We are in a position to invest in new or fairly new car(s) if they were going to be the best value in the long run. What we are wondering is whether to get 2 - paying the extra running costs in order to save on fuel some of the time (and park more easily!). I have tried to do some sums, but get bogged down in ifs & buts, so just thought I'd ask about others' experiences.

Thanks

Focus estate. Not too big not too small. Plenty of space if you need it.

Range of engines. Decent towing weights.

Short journeys? avoid diesels with a DPF. Get a petrol. Longer journeys are OK with a diesel/ DPF.

Depends what MPG you require. If your towing then its a balance of not too thirsty to will it have enough power to tow up the hills.
