Car registration error on parking ticket

Hi,
Islington council have a 'roamer' scheme which, provided you have a valid resident parking permit, allows you to use any residents at certain times of the day. I mistakenly parked in a 'business permit holders' only bay. It's an easy mistake to make as the signage is identical and I know loads of people who have been caught out. I was issued with a PCN but the registration number has one letter wrong. I've looked at a few websites but am not sure whether to ignore it as they will not be able to issue a notice to owner based on the car reg. However, using the PCN number and the incorrect registration I've been able to view the photographs online which clearly show the car and the correct registration number. Should I pay or ignore?

    You can safely ignore this.

A wrong registration number is fatal to a Council PCN.

In the unlikely event that you get a NTO, your response would be "The contravention did not occur".

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

  • Thanks for he replies re the incorrect car registration. I'm just especially nervous as they have photographs which clearly show my car/close up of tax disc and clear photo of the registration. Am going to take your advice and ignore tho!

Makes no difference, it's what's on the PCN that counts. They cannot re-issue a corrected ticket for the same contravention

Photos are far end of the evidence chain in council enforcement - everything else has to be correct and tested before they are considered.

So all an image will do here is confirm that the patroller has made a fatal error with the original ticket and they can't go back and correct that after the fact.
