Second hand bike help please

I bought a second hand bike from a local shop two days ago. I was told it was in good working order apart from the cables which needed replacing and maybe taking a little rust off here and there. I paid £90 for this bike. Today the chain snapped, but luckily I had already spoken to somebody in a different shop about having a look at it to solve a few problems with it.

As it turns out it has a lot of problems. The chain obviously needs replacing, as do the rear cogs, all the cables, rear crank bearing and a few other things. All in all the repairs will cost £120!

I called the shop that sold it to me and the owner said they never take bikes back but offered to help fix a few things.

What are my rights? Can I demand a refund or an exchange? If he refuses what can I or should I do? I'm completely broke at the moment so I cant afford the repairs and I need the bike to get to work 6 days a week as I start earlier than the buses run.

Please help me I feel really powerless and this is causing me so much stress.

Get the 2nd shop to write down what the problems are.
2)with the letter take bike back to first shop and get them to repair them for free.(excepting the cables)
    3) £90 is too expensive for a second hand bike unless it is in good condition and a good make.
    4) Get your next bike from gumtree and learn beforehand what to look out for in a bike.
    $) Buy a very good D lock

£90 is too expensive for a second hand bike? LOL do you know anything about bikes? £90 might be too much for a halfords special, yeah, but anything is, but you're not going to pick up a decent brand second hand for £90 unless it needs a lot of work.

That's the problem, we do not know what bike it was, how old etc

OP List the problems with the bike along with the make, model and roughly how old the bike is and post it on the Public Transport & Cycling forum. The well informed lot there may be able to give some advice on how to save yourself some money or let you know if the repairs are worth it and any possible upgrades that may be worth doing while the bike is being repaired.

I guess it all comes down to what is reasonable wear and tear on a used bike. Do these components actually need replacing? Or are they merely showing signs of wear? For example, my 2mm car tyre doesn't need replacing, but is certainly subjected to many miles of w&t and most garages would recommend it be changed.
