Travel Insurance for a pregnant expat??

Hello All,

Bit of a long shot asking here, but just in case...

Does anyone know of any expat insurance companies that might cover a pregnant expat flying from Asia to the UK when 34 weeks pregnant? I know both the expat thing and the pregnancy thing are fairly problematic on their own, but combined together it seems like an impossible task. Extensive googling and phoning hasn't turned up much...

Any ideas anyone? :o

What do you actually want cover for? Is it a holiday here or a one way flight and you're returning here?
  • It's just a one-way flight back to the UK as I'm relocating. I don't normally bother with travel insurance when I fly between Hong Kong and the UK, but I have just a teeny weeny tiny little fear of the plane diverting and me ending up in labour in a whole other country without any kind of insurance. Of course, that's simply not going to happen...but, you know... :) So, I guess if I did find someone to cover me, I'd want to take out insurance for a week or two to be safe.

The likes of World Nomads will provide cover for you but would exclude the pregnancy itself as it is effectively a pre-existing condition. So if you were taken ill for something other than the pregnancy you'd be covered, likewise for a diversion but if you had a complication from the pregnancy you wouldnt.

There are a couple of others like HCC/ Atlas but I suspect they will all have the same clauses.

Do you have private medical insurance in your current country of residence? Does it cover pregnancy? Can it be extended internationally for this purpose?
  • Hi II, thanks for the response. I don't have private medical insurance, no.

What you've said about World Nomads covering me, but not the pregnancy has made something click into place now. I normally just buy travel insurance through my bank here (HSBC), usually last minute at the airport through the ATM. :) Anyway, I thought I would check whether they would cover me whilst pregnant, so I rang and asked and was told that yes, I could still buy their travel insurance whilst pregnant. A few days later, I went online to buy it and just thought I'd check the exemptions, and yep, pregnancy was exempt. I just assumed something had been lost in translation when I was talking to the woman at the bank, but after what you've said, that now makes sense - I can still get the travel insurance and be covered for myself and the trip and the baggage, etc. but anything related to the pregnancy won't be covered. Aha! :)

I've come to the conclusion that no-one covers pregnancy at this stage...I've come across a few that cover it up to 24 or 28 weeks, but 34 weeks seems impossible, like you say. :)

But of course, everything will be fine anyway, so it doesn't matter...! :)

Thanks again for your replies. :)
