Credit Card Processing Issue

My father runs a small takeaway business. Average transactions processed on the credit card machine tend to be about £20-£30.
Last year in August, my father had to go away for a few weeks and left the takeaway to run with a manager. He had access to all the bank accounts etc in order to run the business. All seemed fine. However a few weeks after my dad came back we got a letter from elavon saying that a chargeback was being done for a £2000 transaction.
It seems that the chap had put some "dodgy" transactions through our credit card machine. Withdrawn the cash from the bank account and the chargeback was done a number of weeks later.
Unfortunately the chap has now left and i am being chased by elavon and their associated debt recovery company for the debt.
I have sent a letter to both elavon and the debt recovery company but they keep sending continual requests to pay the account. Is there anything that we can do resolve this.
Thanks for your help in advance.

As a starting point have you reported the ex-manager to the police? Mention suspected money laundering and you are likely to get their attention.
Apart from that, there is not much you can do - the transactions were placed through the business's merchant account, therefore the business is liable.0
