Open the sheets you want to link.
Click on the cell you want the data to appear in and type =
Go the other sheet and click on the cell with the original data and hit "ENTER"

As a fellow structural engineer, I suggest you take a look at MathCad, it's miles better than Excel for that sort of work.I have to admit I haven't used my financial spreadsheet for a while, as I got used to my financial situation (I got in debt after finishing uni and moving hundreds of miles away from home about 3 or 4 years ago). Today I can practically remember every bill I've got going out for the month, and as most of them are on direct debit I don't need to do anything except check my statements EVERY MONTH.
However, I do use spreadsheets on a very regular basis for my work, things like designing prestressed concrete beams, retaining walls, all sorts of structural design really. I can even define new functions (to an extent),to make my life easier.
Just so you know, my largest Excel file is 33Mb. Any challengers?
It's a great piece of kit and far more fun.0 -
Thanks bandraoi. We've got MatchCAD in the office, although I haven't used it.
Unfortunately I've got enough on my plate trying to learn MATLAB and LUSAS.0 -

Hi if you want to link two spreadsheets together. open the spreadsheets together (minimise the one you want to get information from, then say if you wanted to have a total of amounts from one excel spreadsheet put the = sign click the cell you want info from the click+ then click the cell from the other spreadsheet (you want the info from) then press enter. this should then bring you back to the first spreadsheet. as the individual sheets are updated your info should be updated too.0 -

Just be careful an consistent with your naming convention - it uses the full path when referring to your other spreadsheet. This is a pain in the rear end at times..."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)
"We were born and raised in a summer haze." Adele 'Someone like you.'
"Blowing your mind, 'cause you know what you'll find, when you're looking for things in the sky." OMD 'Julia's Song'0 -
keep the two spreadsheets in the same folder at all times, and you should be ok.0

But bang goes the hierarchial naming system..."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)
