Public Liability Insurance for Charity Collection

I am taking part in a number of power walking events this year with a fairly hefty fundraising target, and contacted a local shopping centre about doing a charity collection on their premises - it's just 2 shops (M&S and Tesco) and 2 of us will be there with collecting buckets for 1 day. The Centre Manager advised that I didn't need a council licence because they are private premises, but only when they sent me the official notification of permission to collect did I find out that I need £500,000 public liability cover.
Does anyone know a company who would provide this at a reasonable cost? I did one online quote and it was about £83, which is totally ridiculous! What are we going to do? Drop a heavy bucket of coins on someone's foot?!!
If I can find it cheaply (like about £25), I'll consider it otherwise it becomes a no-go! Many thanks.

Which charity are you collecting for?0

Walk the Walk, the breast cancer charity who organise the Moonwalk. I'm doing Moonwalks in London, Edinburgh, Iceland and America, plus the Sunwalk and a bunch of other half marathons as well. I have a minimum target of £1,300 so I thought the street collection would help, rather than tapping my family and friends for the 8th year in a row!0

Ask them as a lot of charities can cover you for free using their own cover.0

Sorry, meant to say that I tried that already but the answer is unfortunately no. They said it would be way too expensive so their PL insurance only covers their own staff.0

Ask your home Insurers, some will cover you under your home cover and provide a letter.
I've seen some of these covered by the local council, see if they have any staff for charity work or improving the local community as they may be able to help0 -
Assuming you are a volunteer, I agree with dacouch. Most home contents cover provides at least £1 million personal liability cover which should be sufficient.0

Unfortunately not all Insurance staff understand this and will not always issue written confirmation that cover is in place which the shopping centre will normally require.0 -

Hi I found this post as I am looking for public liability for similar reasons, it looks like we are both better getting one off event insurance on this occasion, and this seems a more reasonable cost.0
