Slow Cooker: definitely on my wish list! I have a round one which I use such a lot - but would love one of those big american oval ones - the sort you can get a whole chicken in etc.
Might try John Lewis.I have five stars! This doesn't mean that I know anything about any of the things I post. I could be a raving lunatic, or a brilliant genius, or just some guy on the internet. In fact, I could be all three at the same time.
If anything I say makes sense, then do it. If not, don't. Don't blame me or my stars if you do something stupid because I suggested it. I'm responsible for my own stupidity only. You are responsible for yours.
Why, I don't even have five stars anymore! Aren't you glad you aren't responsible for my stupidity?0 -
Judi, I've got the Tightwad Gazettes (all three, I think). I'll check with my wife in case she wants them, but otherwise I'll gladly pass them on for whatever it costs to send them. PM me to remind me if you're interested.
Thankyou Tim, they are brilliant. Have just started reading the first one. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Re. pressure cookers - my mum has one but I always thought it was a bit fierce. It was like the Old Faithful geyser when it got going. Had visions of blowing hole in ceiling by not screwing weights down tightly enough or them being faulty. (I'm a wuss) However I have got the bottom half of one of those tall old ones and it makes an excellent jam and chutney-making pan. Many modern pans are just too small to do preserves in because they boil up a lot, especially jam.
If you make jam a good way to spin out expensive fruit e.g. strawberries, raspberries, is to put a couple of cooking apples in which also makes sure there will be enough pectin for the jam to set. I started with blackberry and apple jam - the blackberries were free, growing in the hedges! I also suggest Pick Your Own farms are a good way to avoid inflated supermarket prices, if you haven't a suitable garden to grow any fruit. You can collect jars and ask friends to collect them for you to put the jam in when you've made it. Small ones are the best as a) you don't have to eat so much at once and b) you seem to have made more afterwards!0 -
Another use for a pressure cooker is for cooking your Christmas pudding in double-quick time!
A year or two ago, we bought one of those Tefal three-tier steamers and they are really good. We use it every single week now. You can cook meat/fish in the bottom layer and then steam your veggies on the two upper layers. I find myself standing in the kitchen with nothing to do, as you don't have to worry about pans boiling over - it's all really simple. And when it comes to serving, there are no pans to drain either. It's a doddle.Carpe diem0 -

The only thing I have ever used a pressure cooker for is to cook a ham. If you have a bay tree, put a couple of bay leaves in and some peppercorns - give it half an hour and voila - yummy ham!
;D

A pressure cooker is the only way to make Potatoe Pie, just chop up onions and potatoes add some mince and an OXO cube and cook for about 10 mins then transfer to a casserole dish and put a crust on.......MMMMMMMM delicious with Daddies sauce.
My mum used to make it in the biggest ceramic dish in the world ( There were 8 of us ) and we all had seconds.0 -
