To be honest with you I found the tightwad gazette a waste of money. It was far too american centric, no effort had been made to re-edit it for the international audience .

Yes, I agree with that. But what made/makes the book so helpful for me is that her primary aim isn't to give specific hints and tips, but to give principles and examples of how to cost things, or approach certain situations. The example of the price of chicken is probably not specifically relevant in the US now, 10 years or so after the book was written. It is really Amy Da-whatshername's way of looking at things that comes across in this book, and personally I have found it very refreshing. But we are all different, aren't we :)

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0375752250/qid=1086679541/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/202-1158359-2593433

A look there should answer your question far better than I could :)
Then you will see what I mean by "Amy Da-whatshername" ;D

Tightwad's Gazette: They're very inspiring books, even if you don't use the tips directly (most of these seem to revolve around powered milk - perhaps it would be interesting to mix this with vinegar and bicarb to see what happens... ). Not an essential buy as this site is better for day to day stuff, but well worth a read.

The old girl uses a pressure cooker to cook meat before mixing into a curry.

I love the taste of pressurised meat! Gives it a very nice texture.

She also steams potatoes and other veg in there too.

:) pressure cookers are great for making stock for soup from those left over chicken bones. Soup of any kind comes out great; being married to a scot had to learn how to make soup pretty quickly it cooks the lentils etc. v. well wouldn't be without mine.
another addition to the wish list how about a slow cooker?
I have recipe book from a prestige cooker if you want a scaned copy of some of the recipes email me

I've seen - don't laugh - these silicon food covers from Natural Collection which would mean I would never have to buy clingfilm again! Moneysaving and green!

However they cost around £20 for 4 so I'd have to buy a fair few rolls of clingfilm to make it worth my while...also having seen a 1st aid item on tv about burns I'm nervous about not having cling film in the house!

Would also like a slow cooker and a pressure cooker but have so little space in my kitchen...also a chest freezer for the garage so I can buy in bulk and freeze.

I should have checked in earlier!

Check out the Big W shops - I had a pressure cooker on my wish list for ages and finally got a really good stainless steel 7 litre one for £25 - and it comes with a great little cook book
Nahh if Tim isnt able to send me the book i will order it used from Amazon.

These books are also on my wishlist. I've got the first one and it really helps put you in the right 'mindset' for frugality and most of the tips are easy enough to transfer to the european market. I bought mine from ebay usa and had it shipped over - I think it was about £4 and even has the authors signature in the front!!!

If anyone else has any copies going spare I'd happily buy them ;D

Slow Cooker: definitely on my wish list! I have a round one which I use such a lot - but would love one of those big american oval ones - the sort you can get a whole chicken in etc.
