question about wanting to cancle in 14day cooloing off period, £75+ charge???

Hi, I`m new here so thanks in advance for any help :)

Basically I got my insurance thru confused.com with a company called igo4 insurance, To start 11/3/2013 and cost £397, which I paid all upfront on 10/3/2013 when I got quote thru confused.com.

1 week later I got an email saying I owe them a further £103 for incorrect details.

After ringing them up and asking why, they said that.....

They have to charge me £103 to change my date I got my driving lisence, because I had stated I got it on 10/3/2010 when I actually got it on 24/10/2010 (14 days later)

But I never entered 10/3/2010.... on confused.com website there options were 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, 4 year etc. so naturally I entered 3 years, as it was closest.
So as I done the quote on 10/3/2013 I can only assume that confused.com automatically entered 3 years prior to the date on my behalf? (10/3/2010) Nowhere whatsoever was I able to enter the correct date?

So after trying to argue my case on the phone I told them I wanted to cancel my insurance with them as I wasnt happy and I was in my 14 day cooling off period, So they told me I would have to pay £75 cancelation fee plus any days of my insurance.

Im happy to pay any days insurance ive had as it works out about £10 or so, but the extra £75 cancelation fee seem ridiculous.

So my questions are:

Is it my fault for the incorrect data or confused. com?
Can igo4 insurance charge me £103 to change it?
Can igo4 insurance charge me £75 plus any days insured to cancel my insurance?

thanks in advance for any help :)

Jamie.

Hi this is a regular occurance when going through comparison sites as the questions on the site don't always match those on the insurers website.

I usually find the cheapest price via comparison sites and then try the insurers actual site.

It seems to be accepted that up £50 is acceptable as a cancellation fee once the policy has started. £75 does seem a bit high though.
  • thanks for the reply, i realise now maybe i should have checked the details more but ive never had to check the date i got my license on any car or motor bike insurance ive had before, didnt even realise it mattered too much as long as it was a current license and the no claims was correct.

and im pretty sure £75+ cancelation fee is far too high?!
  • I'll be honest and I can't claim to know how every insurance company works but £75 does seem quite high. Have you got any documents through at all? What does it say under cancellation rights?

  • its an online only company, it costs £15 to have the documents sent to me.

is there anywhere that states whats the standard/maximum cancelation fee within the 14day cooling off period?

    thanks again

The documentation they have sent you will detail all charges that can apply in various circumstances.

    Cancellation
When you receive your Policy, you have 14 days in which to consider the cover provided. If the cover does not meet your requirements, you have the right to cancel the Policy and receive a refund, provided no claims have been made. The refund will be subject to a charge for any cover that has been in force. Please see the Terms and Conditions for details of administration charges. You must return all your documents including the certificate of insurance to Us. Refunds will be made within 30 days of receipt of your request to cancel and the policy documentation and certificate of insurance

  • ok ill double check the documents later when i get a chance, so if the documetns state the £75+ then i have to pay it?

pretty sure everybody ive asked and everywhere online ive looked where nowhere near that price, more like £20-£35 :/

    thanks again
  • Yeah, there's a section headed 'Cancellation of renewal' which states

Your policy is a contract for 12 months. If your insurance is cancelled for any reason you will be charged £75.00 in addition to the charge made by your insurer for the cover you have had.

That's a winner for 'Highest Cancellation charge I have seen' but it is there ultimately.

    But he's not cancelling a renewal - he's cancelling a new policy.

For the record, if an Insurer asks you how long you've owned your licence they mean complete years, rounding it up is not correct and has caused your problem
